oh... it's a long process. I have been learning English for many years. regular classes, spacial classes, with teachers and tutors - you name it! at some point it became just a self-eduction. I talk, read, write and think in English. 'cause I need I and just for fun.

I think watching tv shows in English might be an effective way to learn the language. I've been advising my friends to start doing that, but apparently they are too busy.

Inthernet, textbooks and all that... If honestly, english very complex for me, I more simply account french

I can say that this is the most effective method. I've been studying english since I was 7. School, courses, then university (I have a degree in english language & literature). Most of my courses in university were basically useless. I still suck at grammar.

I had to stay at home for a couple of month. I started watching Tv shows in english - regularly, every day. My level improved just after 2 or 3 months. I still do that everyday (well, when I have time), also I read news, fanfiction, spoilers|other tv-show related stuff.

The worst part is that you forget the language as soon as you stop using it (french, german, czeck, slovak - been there, done that).

Ами, I agree about the last part, I don't remember French whatsoever.

What tv shows have you been watching for those few months?

Яна, a lot of them)) Specifically I remember Gossip Girl, Bones, Pretty Little Liars, Body of Proof, The Mentalist (the favorite one of this whole bunch). These are shows I watched from the beginning. Also I was keeping up with Castle, Vampire Diaries and something else. I can't remember what.

But Fringe (half year later) was the real challenge. Because of Walter. I could barely understand him without subtitles before I got used to his "style" and crazyness.

TV shows in English forever! it's a funny and effective way to improve some aspects.

Exactly. And if you sleep, eat and do your average shit, it remains, let's say 5 hours a day of practice. It's still 5 goddamn years.
You' we called it a RULE. This is not a fucking RULE, it's common sense and logic. Doing anything for 5 hours a day will make you a master.

Everything had started from my father who knew english quite well, he helped me a lot with my studies. Then I decided that I'll go abroad to the university and consequently I needed to score not less than 5.0 in IELTS. I've done a lot of work with my english tutor. Luckily I have got 7.5 and went to the UK, where I continued my studies. I can say that reading books, listening music and watching movies and TV shows in English was quite a useful experience either.)

It shouldn't be like that - there are so many things except learning English you have to do in your daily life so this is why it takes a way longer to learn any language.

It's a shame, but now I don't improve or even just practise my English. It happens all the time in summer, when I have so many interesting activities, and no supporters in learning. Nevertheless, I hope, this autumn I will change my habit and start watching some tv series without subtitles or russian translation. Guffy, i've been studying English for more than 17 years now, at school and university. But my purpose is to improve my level. That's why I try to read books, watch videos and listen to music in English. I do not have enough time for it now though.

Ironically, I used to work at a call centre a lot. =lolbuagaga= So, if I've been actively speaking English for at least 8 hours per day x 221 working days x 2 years (2015 and 2016) - that's 3,565 hours for those 2 years.

As for 2017, let's say it was 2 hours per every day (lots of reading, not much speaking) x 365 days = 670 hours.

That's 4,235 hours since the moment of my message.

So... It's 10,235 hours now! YES, I HAVE REACHED THE TARGET! :runing:

Btw, I have heard recently that if you dedicate 40 minutes every day for learning the language, you will recognize improvements pretty soon! 10 min for writing, 10 for reading, 10 for listening and 10 for speaking. Maybe, I have even read this information on this subforum :lol:

Supreme, that's an interesting fact. I'd like to think that's true, because practicing for 40 mins every day is a really good commitment.

I personally think that 10 mins might not be enough to focus on anything in particular. I'd rather write for 40 mins and actually get involved in that activity, as opposed to just starting ans finishing it right away, in 10 mins.

Maybe changing the activity every day would work? You read for 40 mins on Monday, write for 40 mins on Tuesday, etc?

Supreme, I think any skill can be improvet, if you practice regulary. But i can't force myself, just don't feel motivation :(
But when I studied day after day during for a couple of months, my level grew fron full zero to "can understand a simple adaptive text". Only the skill of writing/speaking still bad.

On this topic, I want to try to keep a dairy on English. What do you think about? Has somebody tried this method?

Starting a diary is a great idea. Maybe we can turn it into a contest here, in English? :) I'll create a "Dairy contest" and we will all post a little bit about our days. It doesn't have to be a lot, and it doesn't need to be every day either. Just something simple, interesting.

I started learning English when I was 5 years old and I lived in Turkey. My teacher was from America, so now I have the best accent, pronunciation, well, the best English in school — I speak American like native speaker. My teachers say that not even an adult can make this progress just learning English. They call my accent «a gift from God», but I don’t think so.

So. I decide to study english. I passed the written test at language center, I felt confident in my answers. But suddenly then I had to talk on english maybe first time in my life! Furthermore, with native speaker! So I passed the speaking not so good))
However, the administrator said my level is upper intermidiate and she enrolled me in the corresponding class. I already visited 4 lessons, and I am already less afraid to talk)

Well actually I don't study this language. I'd better speek French, sometimes I think in it, but I really don't want to lose this one.

Ром Торором, I think French is even more useful, because not that many people in Russia speak this language. Lots of folks know English, but French isn't the most popular one. Knowing it would actually help you get more jobs, especially overseas. Oh, and yes, it will help you in Paris - I remember about your dream. =)

I learn English every day. Now I use a program Duolingo, and every day I get points for my lessons. Now I'm in a diamond league. It's the highest league. And I'm proud of myself, because I have enough patience to continue my study.
